'The Fast and Furious' Returns to Los Angeles

April 3, 2009 at 12:07 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

We confess, when we ran our Panama and Dominican Republic Field Trip series these past two weeks, we had no idea that Fast and Furious 4 would take place in both of those locations. But the movie, which is playing in theaters today, does begin in those tropical locales. If you need advice on what to see and do in either Panama or the DR go here and here.

However, you're probably correct in thinking that neither of those places sound ideal for street-racing. And you're right. So the fourth installment of this Vin Diesel series heads back to where it all began--Los Angeles.

The movie is actually a prequel to Fast and "Furious: Tokyo Drift" so it's the sequel to the franchise's second film, "2 Fast 2 Furious." In this movie, several scenes were filmed in Stevenson Ranch outside of Los Angeles and Vin Diesel and crew also headed down to Mexico. But the great thing about Los Angeles proper, is that you can visit all the sites that made it into the original Fast and Furious movie.

Where to Stay: The new Andaz by Hyatt in West Hollywood is located in the former Riot Hyatt on Sunset where rock bands from the 70s went to party hardy. This is where someone rode down the hallway on a motorcycle. Today, the rooms offer killer views of the Sunset Strip where you can watch folks cruising down the strip (Friday and Saturday nights are big "show-off" nights) from the comfort of your room. Rates are now around $169 a night.

Where to Eat: Cha Cha Cha's is the restaurant where Jordana Brewster's character goes on a date with Paul Walker (in the first movie) and it's located at 675 Virgil Avenue in the Silverlake neighborhood. But if you want to get in some beach time, you can go to the Santa Monica location at 1906 Ocean Ave.

What to See: Car fans can't not come to LA without hitting up the Petersen Automotive Museum on Fairfax and Wilshire Boulevards. But for a more dedicated Fast and Furious tour, the Universal Studios lot tour takes you by a "Tokyo Drift" set-up where a car "explodes" into the air. And Seeing-Stars.com has an entire list of all the establishments from the first movie to visit.

Insider Tip: For cheap street-racing thrills, head up to Sunset Boulevard in Beverly hills between Doheny and Rodeo. This is where a lot of kids in their rich rides do some very illegal racing very late in the night. We're not saying we condone this activity but if you want to seek it out without having to stray too far from your hotel, this is the place.

    L.A. Rocks

The Fast and Furious has to be my all time favorite movie. I loved everything about these movies. After seeing F&F 4, I decided to head on out to the west coast and stay where the movie took place. I booked a room at a trendy LA Hotel and hit all of the hot spots from the movie. I had a blast and ended up booking a Los Angeles Vacation Rental for my next trip to the west coast! I LOVE L.A.!!!!
