For the genuine Carmel Market experience, hit the market on a Friday before its early afternoon closing and Shabbat sets in. There's an awesome, excited frenzy and energy in the air with vendors shouting their best prices. Once a week (usually on Fridays) crafts, jewelry and unique souvenirs are also sold on a side street adjacent to the market, with most made by local artisans who are happy to talk to you about their favorite neighborhood in the city or where the party is that night.
After the market, the best direction is to head up Sheinkin Street, where fun coffee bars, shops and outdoor eateries line the street, ideal for watching the crowds. So take a break from the massive hotel Israeli buffet breakfasts and spend your shekels at Carmel instead.
The Carmel Market is open from Sunday to Thursday from 8am until dark and on Friday from 8am to 2pm before Shabbat.
