From there, we went and took a very touristy picture. I would like to apologize for my choice of footwear.
It may not surprise you to know that there was actually a line of people waiting to be photographed by the Southernmost Point Monument. The line was quite orderly, and an English family was kind enough to take our photo.
On the way back to the hotel, we stopped in the Blond Giraffe for some key lime pie. It was well balanced between sweet and tart, and the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. Still, I think the best key lime pie in the world can be found in Red Hook, Brooklyn, at Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pie.
We needed to float, so we bought tickets for a sunset cruise on the Jolly Roger II, a beautiful sailboat that takes tourists and the odd local on two-hour harbor cruises. The great thing about the Jolly Roger, as opposed to the other party boats, is that it's not a booze cruise. You can bring your own booze (they have a cooler), but there's no need to worry about a bunch of lager louts going crazy at the open bar. Sunset on the water was grand, and we chatted with a nice older couple from Buffalo who had spent the entire winter on the island.
Back on land and hungry from the waves and wine, we made our way to a quirky fish shack called B.O.'s Fish Wagon for some fresh seafood and cold beer. It's a delightfully tacky place, with license plates and all kinds of marine detritus attached to the ceiling and strewn about. The food was good too, and very cheap. Recommended.
We sat next to this guy hanging out of the truck and I wondered if some tourist had made a souvenir of his hand. Where is that hand right now?
We should have called it a night right then, but instead we had some more beers and key lime pie at a joint called Pepe's Cafe. It's worth trying all the key lime pies on the island to determine your own personal favorite, I think.
We walked back to La Concha and passed out in bed, sleeping deeply ahead of our ocean adventure the next day.
