This Weekend in the World: Anzac Day and Book Fairs Galore

April 24, 2009 at 4:26 PM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

· Buenos Aires: Beginning this weekend in the La Rural exhibition complex, the Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires brings over 1 million people together for the Spanish-speaking world's largest literature festival and book fair. Whether you're in the market to beef up your home library, tracking down signatures of your favorite authors or taking in a free lecture, the Feria is fun for all. Fluency in Spanish is of course highly recommended, but then we're sure they'll have language instruction for sale as well. Check out the full schedule for the fair, which runs until May 11, at its website.

· Philadelphia: This weekend is all about relishing the final months of South Philly's Spectrum Arena, due to be razed in September to make way for a shopping mall. Tonight at 8pm, the Philadelphia 76ers host the Orlando Magic in Game Three of the NBA's Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Then on Saturday, the Flyers face the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Six of the NHL's Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday, April 25. If you're not too pooped to party by Saturday night, then hit up the stadium again for a concert from Kings of Leon at 8pm. Ticketmaster is your best friend for these events, and we recommend asking for last-minute specials.

· Sydney: It's a long weekend for you down under people; celebrate Anzac Day like it's going out of style! As a military holiday honoring the World War I fighters from the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, expect lots of drum lines and wreath-laying around the city. Frankly, we recommend milking the long weekend by throwing some shrimps on the barbie and kicking back with picnics. Or you can go out; view the Sydney Anzac Day schedule here.

· Los Angeles: For the west coast-dwelling literati out there, the LA Times will be hosting their free Festival of Books this weekend on the UCLA campus. Do exactly the same stuff as at the Buenos Aires Book Fair, just in English! Show up for talks and signings with David Baldacci, Mary Higgins Clark, Giada DeLaurentiis, and more "authors" like Bob Barker, Alonzo Mourning, Brooke Shields, and Tori Spelling. Get all the details at their event website.
