The recession being what it is, getting to Greece should be easy this summer. You can take Olympic Airlines, which offers pleasantly affordable trans-Atlantic flights. The problem is that Olympic's not linked to any alliance, and an overseas flight is one place where paying a little more might be worth the extra miles. Plus they're basically a regional airline with regional amenities. If that's not your style any of the major airlines can get you to Athens. Delta even flies non-stops from NYC.
If you have some flexibility, though, you might want to consider holding off a little. The Greek summer can be generously described as balmy, and July and August can be suffocating. Wandering around urban areas in the humidity can get out and out painful.
The winter months, on the other hand, are colder but still relatively comfortable. As long as it's not raining the daytime hours are well-suited for exploring anywhere. The nights get a little bit chilly but even that causes a nice bump in the indoor nightlife.
Of course you can land in between, right in the middle of fall. The weather is mild 24/7 and everything is gorgeous. Since Greece is a perpetual party anyway, you probably won't even notice any nighttime activity dropoff.
And yet, and yet - summer is when the kids come out to play. So there's that.
