Where To Party And Protest On Tax Day

April 15, 2009 at 8:48 AM | by kjb | 0 Comments

We’re not going to get all uppity about what is fair and what is not on Tax Day. We pay our fare share to Uncle Sam, and in return, we just hope that he lets us stay around for another year. However, there’s a lot of people expected to voice their opinion today at a Tax Day Tea Party. There's expected to be over 2,000 events around the country, so if you want to protest, go for it.

If you’ve been laid off this year or are just sick and tired of shelling out the cash to programs you don’t believe in, here’s a couple places you may want to express yourself. Just leave the bullhorn at home—we’ve run out of painkillers and have nothing to relieve a potential migraine.

Home of the original tea party that was all about taxation without representation, you’re free to complain and congregate this year in Boston. Things will kick off before the lunch hour and run through the afternoon on the Boston Common. It sounds like people here might be dressing up; so don’t forget your colonial costume. There will be speakers throughout the day to keep you motivated, and if you want a memento of your experience, don’t forget to order a T-Shirt.

Citizens in Houston are all hot and bothered and are planning protests in and around the city proper. Sneak out of your high-rise office building a little early and head to Jones Plaza. The protesting will start at 4 p.m. and will last until 7 p.m.—or until everyone gets called in early for dinner. For those in the ‘burbs head over to Sugar Land Town Square from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to get your fill of the First Amendment.

Whether you’re upstate or in the big apple, the citizens of New York can’t wait to start hucking tea into the water. Albany will be doing their thing at Riverfront Park at the Corning Preserve between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., so you’ll be able to skip over during lunch. Just make sure you don’t get ticketed for littering—you are throwing tea after all. In Manhattan, head over to City Hall Park to meet with Newt Gingrich; there’s nothing like partying down with someone who hates government spending.

If you want a little more sunshine while enjoying your protest, check out the offerings in California. In Fresno, angry protesters will convene in the parking lot of the Save Mart Center between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today. Remember to bring some canned goods, as they’ll be collecting for the local food bank as well. If SoCal is more your style, there will be a couple parties in Los Angeles, several in the OC, and even the Inland Empire is getting in on the fun. If you drive around you’ll probably stumble onto one—they seem to be everywhere.
