Will You Ever Go Back to Greyhound?

April 16, 2009 at 1:09 PM | by | Comments (6)

We're pretty big BoltBus advocates around these parts, and when they don't have a cheap fare, we generally go with Megabus or a Chinatown line. Even though we travel between New York, DC, Philly and Boston pretty frequently, it's been a long time since we've been on a Greyhound.

So we're not sure how we feel about Greyhound's new buses—they've got free WiFi, power outlets, and more leg room—basically everything Bolt has minus the $1 fares. We know we shouldn't feel weird about considering taking Greyhound again—after all, they (very quietly) own BoltBus, so what's the difference? But there's something about it that just doesn't sit right with us. Thinking about going back to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and waiting in those cramped underground lines just doesn't seem as cool as picking up Bolt on the curb, even though we know our money is going to the same place.

Has anyone tried the shiny new Greyhound buses yet? Will you go back or are you also addicted to Bolt? Let us know your preferred method for bus travel in comments below.

Not really...

a big fan of buses; rather go with train, car or something more convenient. Last time I rode Greyhound was Nov. 08 and it was okay I guess, even with the little girl next to me who needed the light because she was "reading". I'll give them a try on my next trip to DC though.

um probably not

So long as I live in a big city with alternative bus companies (hello, everybody and their moms leave out of my bases), I will probably not ever choose Greyhound. Sorry babe, no hard feelings.

Blah

I'd rather hitch a ride with a stranger than get on a Greyhound again. Paint it, change its logo and market it like it is fresh and new...but it is still Greyhound.

I'll keep an eye on them

but BoltBus is freaking sweet.

no way

those awful bus stations (complete with usually awful staff) are enough to keep me away from greyhound forever.

Bait and Switch

I've tried this service twice on the Boston - NY route (apparently all the buses are supposed to be equipped with the new service on this route). Both times, however, the service was extremely overbooked (i.e., instead, there were 3-4 busloads of passengers at each occasions, and only the first of the buses had the promised amenities), so even though we had reserved our seats weeks in advance, we were placed on traditional motorcoaches without any of the advertised amenities. This was extremely disappointing and certainly not what I had agreed to pay for. Greyhound is 0 for 2. I will not be using them again. Such a shame that they can get Boltbus relatively right but can't get their own act together.
