National, Enterprise, and Alamo are the three companies that are waving their banner high and proud just before Earth Day. Each customer paid $1.25 per rental to participate in the program, and the rental car companies made an equal match to preserve our rivers and streams. For those without a calculator handy, that’s about $440,000 in cash money going to carbon offset projects. The car companies will keep on matching up to $1 million—so we should keep on renting.
If you’re a little skeptical about where exactly your extra money is going, listen up. All this cash goes to projects like turning farm waste into electricity and capturing methane gas that’s created by landfills. There are some smaller projects too, like the assistance that has been provided to the Scene View Dairy facilities in Michigan.
So next time you book your rental car online, see if you can also buy a carbon offset. We’re going to try to buy at least two, because we are less than gentle on our rental wrecks.
