Kayak's TravelPost Tries To Win Our Hotel Review Hearts

March 9, 2009 at 11:25 AM | by kjb | 2 Comments

Not to be outdone by TripAdvisor’s latest offering, Kayak has a little something up its sleeve. After hearing about what the competition has to offer, the travel meta-search king sent out a press release to illustrate what still makes it number one.

CEO Steve Hafner lets us known that he’s flattered that TripAdvisor has mimicked his site’s design, but tells us that Kayak’s caliber of results still sets it apart. Uh-oh, the travel bookings/review site feud is on!

Now, Kayak is creeping in on TripAdvisor's turf by launching their own hotel review website. TravelPost is going to, or at least hope to, take travel reviews to the next level. It promises to search over 200 travel sites to bring you the latest in reviews, information, and rates.

If we were TripAdvisor, we’d be worried. Sure, they have all the review mojo now, but they’ve kind of been resting on their laurels and Kayak is definitely up to the challenge.

We took some time to try out TravelPost, and were a little surprised to see the La Quinta in Long Island City ranked in the top five of all hotels in New York City, although it was ranked along side the Hilton New York based on its average of user reviews. The reviews are quick and easy to post, there’s access to user-submitted photos, and of course immediate access to Kayak’s search capabilities on both flight and hotel pricing. We were also happy to see that you can search by user demographics, so you’ll easily discover the best lodging options for ladies under age thirty...or at least hear what they are into.

It will be hard to break our habit of checking TripAdvisor for hotel reviews but TravelPost definitely matches the competition and takes it a slight step ahead with its fast searches and uncluttered design. The latter is probably most important. We just pray that Kayak doesn't install a bunch of pop-ups asking us to join their newsletters.

Welcome to the hotel metasearch arena!

Congratulations to TravelPost for their launch. Its a great start and will help drive innovation in the industry--in fact we've already garnered a few insights from your launch that will help us evolve our own hotel metasearch product at UpTake! The key issue that TravelPost needs to address is comprehensiveness. Its not clear how TravelPost will be comprehensive when its announcement press release publicly bashes the largest travel review site in the industry, TripAdvisor! Well, UpTake has taken a different approach -- seeking to complementary to TripAdvisor and TravelPost. Maybe that's why we have 5000 sources at UpTake and TravelPost so far only has 200+ sources. In any case, we (at UpTake) would be pleased to collaborate with TravelPost in moving the industry forward. But lets start by having Steve Hafner stop badmouthing other travel review sites!
