What Will McDonald's Look Like In the Future?

March 6, 2009 at 9:56 AM | by kjb | 1 Comment

Believe it or not, that is what McDonald's will look like in the future.

McDonald’s is an essential part of the travel experience. The American icon meets you before you make it to your gate, it’s often the only place for coffee on the way to the airport, and almost every country on earth has one—like it or not.

That’s why we’re happy to hear Ronald and company are sprucing things up a bit, and have hired a design firm to refresh and update their image. If you’re going to eat some McNuggets you might as well do it in style.

Studio Gaia was given the mission of creating three new designs for the fast food place. The director of restaurant design said that the company was looking for more modern environments that are already seen in Europe, and that’s what they got. The designers used inexpensive materials to create a feeling of luxury, and it looks like they’ve done it well.

The first design is Urban Living. It’s designed for city locations, and is already present in New York City. Browns, whites, and grays dominate the color palette and there’s plenty of black and white images of the cityscape. McDonald's wants people to come in, enjoy their surroundings, and feel comfortable—like Starbucks—and crack open their laptop and get to business. The designers understood that most of the business is done through the drive-thru, so they looked to create a place where it was encouraged to dine-in.

For more traditional locations Young and Cheerful joins the lineup along with Fresh and Vibrant. The former attempts to create a communal design through the use of wood and vibrant colors. Fresh and Vibrant puts the emphasis on quality ingredients with oversized imagery devoted to the produce and ingredients used at the restaurant.

The design also hopes to push the more healthy alternatives that the restaurant has to offer as well as their coffee products. Both of these designs can be seen in Florida.

Overall, we want to check out a new design in person, but we just hope they don’t remove the playground and ball pit.

    more photos...

There are more photos of this design (and the newest of the design schemes, Young and Cheerful) at http://www.isiamerica.com/html/mcdonald_s.html

The company I work for (ISI - Interior Systems Inc) worked to provide the seating and decor elements and helped to work the GAIA designs into a budget-friendly option...

Also, The 'Urban Living' design was renamed to 'Simply Modern' in case you notice the change.

There's also a great feature about the design scheme catalog featured in Communication Arts.

Would love to hear your feedback!
