Where Vancouver is Watching The 'Watchmen'

March 6, 2009 at 8:57 AM | by cmb | 0 Comments

"Watchmen", the adaptation of the critically acclaimed graphic novel of the same name about a group of superheroes in an alternate universe circa 1985, opens nationwide today. The movie is set in NYC but was primarily filmed on a sound stage in Vancouver with only a few days on location in L.A. and New York. Here’s your guide to Vancouver, "Watchmen" style.

What to Stay:
The Loden opened back in October and has been receiving rave reviews since. This ultramodern hotel offers several geek chic amenities. Guests receive key cards that provide secure access to the elevator just by rubbing them against a screen, there are iPod docks in every room, laptops are available for loan and suites come with a Wii! Considering what this hotel has to offer the rates are reasonable too. Currently, a standard room is about $239.

Where to Eat:
A meal at the Old Terminal Pub in New Westminster isn’t exactly fine dining but it was one of the locations in "Watchmen" so there is no better way to get close to the film. Old Terminal serves the usual bar fare, deli sandwiches, BBQ and burgers. They also have typical bar games like darts, Keno and pool so at least you can be distracted while choking down your food.

What to See:
Another local filming location is the Bloedel Floral Conservatory, one of Vancouver’s most popular attractions year round. The triodetic dome creates a climate controlled environment that is perfect for exotic plants, tropical flowers and the 100 eye-catching birds that call the conservatory home. During the winter, the dome is open Monday-Friday, 10 AM to 5 PM.
