Beautiful, Bizarre Beer Week in Philly

March 5, 2009 at 8:41 AM | by | Comment (1)

We've been to plenty of beer festivals in our day—too many, trust us—but we've never seen a brew celebration take over a town quite the way Philly Beer Week does. We were down there for the inaugural event last year, and it seemed no one in the whole city could talk about anything but brews.

For its second outing, which starts Friday, PBW has suds-lovers salivating with nearly 700 different events that go way beyond just tastings. Here are a few of our bizarre-o favs:

Local chocolate shop Eclat will be hawking a treat we'd never heard of but are pretty sure is about to get huge: Beer-infused chocolate! Yep, you can pick up a six-pack of creamy, chocolate truffles infused with some of the best local Belgian beers.

Quirky Spring Garden neighborhood bar The Institute has the perfect idea for a lazy Saturday—the extreme beer and Wii sports challenge. Now we can do what we always do on a Saturday afternoon but leave the house too!

Of if that's too mellow for you, there's the Brewery Bike Ride on Saturday morning—a 14-mile trek with stops at all of the city's breweries. Sounds a bit like a recipe for puking, but a great idea if you can handle your beer and bikes better than us.

You can check out all the events—yes, there are even a few simple tastings—over at the Philly Beer Week site .

Philly Beer Week

Seriously, this is the talk of the town. I already know two people taking of Friday the 13th to go to Friday the Firkenteenth at Grey Lodge Pub in the Northeast. www.uwishunu.com blog is doing some categorizing of Beer Week events, and some top-five listings. Might help make it more manageable. Septa has a Sip Safely pass too... Happy Sudsing!
