Our first stop is Peter Pan Donut and Pastry Shop in Brooklyn. Set on Greenpoint's busy Manhattan Avenue, Peter Pan is one of those rare establishments that draws equal fervor from the nabe's old-school stalwarts and its trendier newcomers. At any time of the day, this tiny classic counter space is packed with both hungover hipsters gorging on Bavarian creams and Polish moms stopping by for the week's supply of coffee cake. Unfortunately this means you'll never find a full shelf of donuts--and yes, people will cut in front of you to get that last marble crueller--but it also means you'll never be served a stale donut, as the hot ones come fresh out of the oven all day long.
Don't look for anything cream-cheese-frosted or pistachio-studded here; Peter Pan peddles the classics—honey glaze, chocolate, toasted coconut. But as far those classics go, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better hot, fresh piece of fried dough. Got a donut shop we should know about? Don't keep that tasty goodness from us, let us know where!
