Panama Hotel Has Old World Setting, New World Style

Where: Avenida A. Casco Antigua, Panama City, Panama

Our own Brendan Spiegel is down in Panama this week and will be reporting back on all that he's seen and done. Whether or not he's wearing a Panama Hat, we can't say. But if you have any questions or suggestions for him, let us know.

Considering how built-up and cosmopolitan much of Panama City is, we've found that to our tastes, the accommodations game is surprisingly lacking.

You've got a bunch of very high-end places like The Bristol, which are pretty clearly outside our price range; there's a whole slew of cheap, dimly-lit pensions that strike us as just a tad too sketchy; and there are only one or two backpacker hostels to even speak of.

All that is why the Canal House, the first boutique hotel to open in Casco Viejo, is pretty much a must to know about. Set in a restored 1893 mansion, Canal House embraces the Casco's old world surroundings with exposed brick walls, opulent antique furnishings and French doors that open onto a wraparound balcony overlooking the center of the neighborhood.

Inside, the loft-style suites are outfitted with high-tech goodies including plasma screen TVs, WiFi, and iPod docking stations. The hotel also offers in-house spa treatments and a private chef.

You might feel like a bit of a modern-day colonialist staying in such swank surroundings in a still-developing 'hood, but with rooms starting at $175 a night, it's hard to pass up.
