The idea of this somewhat common border has been kicking around since the early 1990s, but has now been pushed to the top of the list along with other important issues like climate change and the economic crisis. There are obviously still some issues if flights are to take off between domestic terminals. The airports will need to be able to clear passengers for entry into the countries, and ensure that all customs, biosecurity, and quarantine requirements are met.
The goal for a common border has been set for 2015, but they’re looking to speed up this date big time, and may try to wrap things up by the end of this year. Creating a partnership like this, along with aligning economic policies in preparation for the G20 in London, will help set these two countries up for success and prosperity once the global economy (hopefully) kicks into high gear. One thing we know for certain, we can’t wait for some low-cost, low-hassle flights from Sydney to Auckland.
