New Site Helps You Dig Your Hole to China

March 29, 2009 at 2:16 PM | by Victor Ozols | 0 Comments

Have you ever wondered where you'd end up if you could somehow dig a hole straight through the earth from where you were standing? Of course you have. Everybody has. Well, now there's a nifty website that can answer that question in seconds. The Antipodes Map couldn't be simpler to use. Pick any location on earth on a Google map and it will automatically generate its antipode, i.e. the land (or ocean) located on the opposite side of the world.

As for my antipode, well, if I dig straight down from Leonard Street in Brooklyn, my shovel will eventually poke through the floor of the Indian Ocean off the southwest coast of Australia. Not ideal, but it was a long shot anyway, as the vast majority of land mass has antipodes in oceans. The coolest antipodes are Cordoba, Spain and Hamilton, New Zealand and Bogota, Colombia and Jakarta, Indonesia.

As far as digging to China goes, you'll need start in South America. A straight hole from Salto, Uruguay will get you close to Shanghai. Wear loose clothing, as I hear it's hot near the center of the earth. Beyond that, you're on your own. Please share any photos and Bugs Bunny sightings.
