Air Asia X Wants to Long-Haul You From New York and California

March 27, 2009 at 3:51 PM | by | Comments (3)

Update: Just heard from our tipster, the plan is to have the flights be direct to KL from Cali and JFK.

We love airline rumors! It's been a long time since we had something juicy to talk about. So let's get gossiping.

A tipster says that Air Asia X is looking to possibly expand its routes to Kuala Lumpur and they have their eyes set on the United States.

Azran Osman Rani (CEO of AirAsia X) has been talking to JFK and 2 California airports regarding launching long haul service from KL. There's nothing definitive lined up, but the time-frame would be in about a year.

Now, we're working on tracking down when this would be an alliance between Air Asia and another airline, or if Air Asia would man the flight(s) the whole way. But if you've got any more inside scoop, we'd love to hear it. Similarly, would you fly Air Asia X from the states to KL on their no-frills planes? Let us know.

Air Asia's USA plans

The US plans are indeed ambitious, especially if Air Asia plans to fly the London-New York sector. I wrote an opinion piece on this subject on 27th March. Feel free to check it out on http://velvetescape.com/blog/?p=605 Cheers, Keith (velvetescape)

AirAsia to the US

US markets were always in AirAsia's plans.....just when exactly is the question. I sure do hope that 2009 is the year, but maybe 2010...... Long haul planes are hard to come by and the airline has so many long haul objectives. Whenever they do arrive on American shores, it will be fabulous, since they have such a fantastic network in ASEAN.

Be careful with AirAsiaX

Most recently, my wife and I were stranded in Abu Dhabi when AirAsiaX announced they were canceling service to/from Abu Dhabi in January this year. They didn't notify us (their stranded passengers) until Feb 10th. Neither did they offer any accommodation nor answer our emails asking for help. We had to get back to Malaysia on our own. They won't reimburse our additional expenses either. They said they would refund the Abu Dhabi/Kuala Lumpur portion of our trip, but it will take them 30-50 days to process the refund. Such an attitude! Watch out for these guys. If you are considering using AirAsiaX, It might be a good idea to develop a plan B... just in case.
