China Wants To Out-Disney Disneyland
More tales from the "we can do anything better than you" files: China reckons they can build their own version of Disneyland that will outstrip Walt's vision. When your population includes one sixth of the world, this might just be possible.
The proposed theme park chain would be based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West--an ironic title, we think, although it's actually about a Buddhist monk's pilgrimmage westwards to India. There's a monkey king, a fairyland in the clouds, a dragon king temple under the sea and demon caves, just to name a few elements that could lend themselves to amusement park rides.
With a revival in the idea of protecting local culture striking China at the moment, this idea really could fly, although there are no signatures on dotted lines yet. But we want them to let us in too because it's not far if foreign tourists can't get their pair of Mickey Monkey King ears.
