Are You Taking Advantage Of Double Elite Qualifying Miles?

March 23, 2009 at 3:11 PM | by kjb | 1 Comment

We all know that the economy has taken its toll on both business and leisure travel. No one is more aware of this than the airline industry. Luckily for travelers, the airlines aren’t going to take this lying down, so if you still have some change left in the travel piggy bank—now’s the time to fly.

In attempt to lure more travelers—especially those from the business world—a few airlines have launched a promotion to grant fliers double elite qualifying miles. You’ll get double the qualifying miles towards swanky status, but not double regular miles for your award ticket dreams. That means it will only take you half the time to reach elite status up in the air, where even the worst trip can become a little better. The possibility of free upgrades, free drinks, snazzy priority luggage tags, and maybe even access to one of those cool airport lounges, makes it totally worth it.

Last week American Airlines was the first to offer this deal, and then United quickly followed. Both of these airlines require you to register for the promotion, and offer the double-dip on flights booked after registering and flying. Continental was the third to get into the game—but their deal is valid for travel that you already have booked. So if you got a good deal to Asia a couple weeks ago, just sign up, and you’ll be enjoying quite the bonus. We wouldn’t be surprised to see something from Delta or US Airways any day now. Just finish your travel before June 15, and you'll be one-step closer.

For the casual flier this might just be thing that helps you reach status, but for the business traveler you might want to pick one of the promotions and go to town. No matter the airline’s fancy name for it, the frequent flier status usually lasts for at least a year—so get booking. Status usually starts at 25,000 miles, with better perks as you get higher in the ranks.

Let us know if this will change your travel plans at all. Will you focus more on one airline, or will price and schedule still be the biggest influence? If you score a crazy mileage run, let us know about that too—so we can also book it!

    i have to confess

im so bad about these promotions. i often think its because i'll still never earn enough for any free stuff. i like southwest's rewards programs which are so easy to understand. plus they email you when you have earned a free flight. virgin america's program is pretty good too. i have a continental and american account and i think the latter is better about miles promotions. which reminds me i should check how many miles i have!
