This summer, Earthwatch is planning an expedition to study the coastal ecology of the Bahamas. Team members will snorkel in shallow waters, measure the shape of the shoreline with a GPS system and survey the diversity of animals living along it. Members will also help identify plants, place artificial reefs in waters close to shore, and record the impact of human activity on the shore.
All participants are also expected to prepare their own breakfasts, field lunches, help with dinners, and clean up their shared apartments. Sounds tough, right? But tough can also be rewarding. Participants help provide information for sustainable development and learn about natural communities above and below the waterline. There is also downtime each day to enjoy the beach, recreational snorkeling, or a guided boat tour. It’s a great way to save the earth and get a tan, all at the same time.
The next expedition to the Bahamas leaves June 20th for 11 days. The minimum contribution accepted to participate is $2350, which includes all lodging and meals.
