New Routes and New Complaints on Spirit Airlines

March 2, 2009 at 11:46 AM | by | Comments (10)

Low cost carrier and marketing maven, Spirit Airlines, recently announced new flights from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Santiago, Dominican Republic. They’ll fly this route starting in June and will go back and forth four times a week. Although we love us some new routes and airfare options, we’re wondering if taking a trip on Spirit is worth it.

Sure, they may offer some of the lowest fares around (if you can find them), but as one of our readers let us know—it might be worth it to spend a little more elsewhere:

I as well will NEVER fly with Sprit Airlines again. We had an uneventful trip to our destination the trip home however was not. We checked in at the Cancun airport and beyond the security checkpoint noticed that the monitors said the flight was delayed. In addition to that there was no gate listed and no Spirit agent available. The departure time grew steadily later and still no agent. Finally when an agent became available we were still given no details. NINE hours later the plane arrived and we flew to Fort Lauderdale where all of us missed our connecting flight.

The flight attendants were cocky despite knowing we had waited nine hours in the Cancun airport. When I asked for a drink of water to take some Tylenol they charged me $3 and the lack of communication at the airport was unacceptable. Never, Never, Never again!

Early this month a user on the FlyerTalk message board, also shared an experience, and doesn’t seem too spirited (ha) about a trip from New York to Florida:

After Spirit Airlines started boarding the 6:40am flight from LGA-FLL this morning, they made passengers disembark; apparently, a flight attendant didn't show up for work, and Spirit needed to find a replacement.

Think the airline is still a great deal, or are you taking a risk when flying with Spirit? Let us know in the comments below.

Spirit is awful with customer service.

A friend of mine took a flight over MLK weekend and it was cancelled due to a flight attendant not showing up to work. Spirit has yet to refund her the money for the round-trip flight. Customer service is in India and no one seems to be able to help her when she calls. It is only a matter of time before they go out of business. http://www.TheBrooklynNomad.com

Hey Brooklyn Nomad

I never really thought about what happens when flight attendants don't show up for work. Slightly more crucial than TPS-report-fillers or Starbucks employees, in that the plane has to have some of them. Hmm.

Refund

Ok fine, so Spirit needs flight attendants, that's understandable. But they made her and many other passengers sit in the airport for hours with no "Plan B". The real issue I was bringing up was that 2 months later she is still no refunded for her flight. Their customer service is a joke.

I was on this flight also

One of my co-workers just found this blog posting and alerted me because I have been complaining about this for like a month.I actually wrote a blog entry on it already which sums it up. http://cocktailsncoconuts.wordpress.com/2009/01/31/cheating-on-spirit-air/ To make a long story short, they charged my card twice for this flight that I never took because of the flight attendant. I called 7 times after the flight (that never happened). I was told that I would receive a refund for my card being double-charged within 24-48 hours. They told me that 4 times over the course of a month. I talked to the supervisors at the call station, but they couldn't do anything. They simply said that it was "pending" in the accounting office. When I asked for the number for the accounting office, they said the only phone number they had was for this call center. Right.... I also tried to get a refund for my flight, not just for the double-charge. I didn't miss it because I was late, or because of weather. Their staff messed up. However, the call center repeatedly told me that they could not issue a refund because the records show that I missed the flight. In reality, they ended up shuttling myself and a few others to JFK airport to take an American Airlines flight 10-12 hours later. There is no NYC office and there is no phone number for headquarters. The only option I had left, after 7 phone calls and numerous attempts at e-mails (all of which bounced back) was to write a written letter and MAIL it to their headquarters in Florida. I did hear back..finally after over a month. (not the mythical 24-48 hours I kept hearing) This is long enough so if you're curious to know what happens, I'll post on my blog when I get home tonight.(see the above link)

Refund for your flight?

Amber. You said you were shuttled from LGA to JFK for your flight to FLL on AA. Did you pay for the AA ticket or did Spirit make the arrangements for you to fly on AA? If the latter is true then you are not entitled to a refund because Spirit endorsed your ticket (used the "funds" you paid for your ticket to "buy" your seat on AA) over to American Airlines. If you indeed paid for the AA ticket out of pocket then you are certainly entitled to a refund of the Spirit ticket. As for the "duplicate" ticket, if Spirit hasn't responded to your inquiries or issued a refund I would contact your credit or debit card issuer and dispute the charge. They will give you a temporary reversal and then investigate the error directly with Spirit. If Spirit doesn't reply to their charge back then the reversal will become permanent.

Update

In response to the last comment. No they didn't charge me again for the AA flight. They had already accidently charge my card for two flights. This I have been trying to get reversed for over a month, and just now finall heard back. I just posted Spirit's response back to me on my Travel Blog. http://cocktailsncoconuts.wordpress.com/ Case in point: And I think brooklynnomad ;-) nailed it when he said that their customer service is a joke. According to their policy, no I should not be refunded for the flight (not talking about the extra charge here). I understand flights are cancelled all the time due to weather, but those conditions are out of the airline's hands. There needs to be a line drawn on what is their fault. If they want to keep customers around, they need to issue a better form of "I'm sorry" when they mess up someone's trip. For over a month, all I've gotten from Spirit is the middle finger.

Actually Had a Good Spirit Experience

When I had to take a flight on Spirit from NYC to Ft. Lauderdale, I was expecting the absolute worst. I didn't even want to book it, but the fare and time were good so I did it anyway. Well, I totally lucked out... The flight was great and it was on-time to the minute. I will fly them again but I wonder if I'll be as lucky the next time. Not counting on it. Then that following weekend I had to fly from NYC to Kansas City on Midwest Air -- now that is the worst airline I have ever experienced. Lies, delays, overall incompetence, awful stewards, etc. -- Liz www.travelogged.com

notify the better business bureau

http://www.bbb.org/ i have done so before, not with airlines, but with a cell phone company (who are almost as hard to deal with.) the company i reported contacted me within a week offering a refund and an apology.

Your kidding right?

You spend 50.00 to fly international and you expect free drinks as well? Your the people we do not want on these flights. I fly to and from Costa Rica a dozen times a year and it saves me thousands of dollars a year. I see people such as your selfs bitching and moaning about having to pay for drinks and delays. Fly Delta or Taca if you want free drinks. Wake up and stop your bitching.

No Rob

No one's complaining about anything like that, it's the fact that Spirit charges for seemingly every little thing (including freakin' carry-on luggage) and then has a customer service department that's seemingly run by drunken monkeys. Then there's the cheap, double-entendre laden ads they have advertising their sales gimmicks. Spirit Airlines just sucks, plain and simple.
