A Retro Diner Brunch in Philly? Better Make It a Double

Sometimes, we just want a good stiff drink with our omelet--oh wait, that's all the time. In the arena of alcohol and egg whites, there is one revamped classic corner dinner which does not disappoint: The Continental on Market Street in the Olde City. Back when we somehow managed to spend a weekend in Philadelphia for under $100, The Continental drew us in with its homespun good looks, kitschy olive-on-a-toothpick lamps, and retro airline lounge theme.

As if that airline theme wasn't enough to put us over the top, the promise of dishes like grapefruit brulee, brioche french toast with caramel bananas, and a breakfast quesadilla officially made us thank the brunch gods that this little niche of the Olde City persists.

It may be a Stephen Starr restaurant, but at least its one of the most affordable; allowing for some trendy play even on the shortest budget (as we were). Apparently, there is also a second location in Midtown Philadelphia, although with more of a club atmosphere than cozy diner.

Nonetheless, whenever brunch goes about mixing vintage kitsch with vodka tonics, that is where you will find us, and hopefully where we'll find you too.
