The airline is a public charter type carrier, and is being operated by Sun Country Airlines. It’s technically a new airline, but also kind of not. Once things get underway, they’ll look to expand a little bit. Newark will be the departure point for destinations like Lansing, Michigan, South Bend, Indiana, Rockford, Illinois, and Melbourne, Florida among others. Again, not exactly the most exciting line-up.
Air Azul will officially kick off June 1, but for now you can catch a flight with them if you really want to. They do offer normal scheduled service from Somerset, Kentucky to Nashville via cute little commuter jets. Although honestly, you could probably drive between the two cities in just over a couple hours.
So far we haven’t heard anything from Azul regarding the name. We’re thinking that they don’t have too much to worry about, but if Air Azul starts to fly to Brazil then we totally expect a fare war—and possibly a lawsuit. PS. Seriously, what is up with using various interpretations of the color "Blue" for airline names? Can we start doing something different--Purple Air maybe? Run by Prince?
