Eager Engineers Plan A 'Green' Island City In The Bay Area

March 17, 2009 at 10:14 AM | by kjb | 0 Comments

Like any big city San Francisco is running out of room. Even with great public transit and the constant flow of eco-friendly options coming from America’s tech center, there just isn’t enough space to keep everyone happy. Engineers, including an ex-Googler, are looking to fix this with an idea that’s one part experiment and one part solution. Their dream is to create a seastead—a manmade island structure right off shore.

Unlike Dubai’s offerings, this new “island” creation looks to do more than just provide swanky accommodations and high elevation tennis. The team at The Seasteading Institute has already begun to draw up plans that would create a floating landmass. They take their design from oil platforms, and hope to create one right on the Pacific Ocean. One engineer likened his design to that of a cruise ship, but we doubt that viewing it from shore will bring back memories of your first Carnival Cruise.

One of their concepts includes moveable neighborhoods and blocks that can be shuffled about to create new city layouts. The crazy ideas don’t stop with the creation of a waterworld. The institute thinks new land is a great place to try new government, and they’d like to test one out that allows marijuana and communal intellectual property.

Ok, now this just sounds like a bad museum exhibition just waiting to happen. They insist that they aren’t just thinking of this plan to get away from the rules, but we’re thinking that they are. They can’t wait to shove it in the face of us jerks on the mainland.

Things are literally still on the drawing board, but these brainstormers think that a prototype can get floating within three years. So far the group has about 600 members that are looking for a life at sea, without rules, and a purple haze instead of a traffic haze. If you want to learn more and meet your new neighbors, they’re meeting in Berkeley (where else?) on March 28.
