All this week, Carolyn Banfalvi will be taking us on a eat-and-drink tour of Vienna, Austria. If you have any questions or suggestions for Vienna Travel, let us know and we'll have Carolyn get back to you. Enjoy.

If there’s anywhere in the world to avoid the coffee chains, it’s Vienna. Think Vienna, and its gilded coffee houses come to mind. These are places where waiters dressed in black and white serve coffee in porcelain cups on silver trays, and the delicate cakes are made as they have been for hundreds of years.

Such iconic Viennese coffee houses have long been places where locals spend significant chunks of their lives, but the city also offers a more modern take on the traditional coffee house, where the younger generations take their coffee and check their email in surroundings ranging from hip Bohemian to sleek revamped versions of landmark cafes.

At some of the fancier places, coffee and cake could run the price of lunch. But on the upside, they won’t rush you to leave, and many Viennese do spend half the day lingering over one cup of coffee.

So what should you try from the long coffee menus? Do what the locals do and order a mélange, a light roasted, milky coffee with a little less froth than a cappuccino.

Everywhere you look in Vienna you’ll find cafes, here are a few not-so-traditional favorites:

· das möbel is a funky coffee house combined with a designer furniture showroom, where the décor changes as pieces are bought.

· Café Drechsler is an institution open 23 hours daily. It was recently made over by British interior designer Sir Terence Conran. Locals worried when the beloved cafe shut down, but were so happy when it re-opened that they didn’t mind the updated look (pictured above.)

· Phil is a laid back place where everything is for sale, even the stacks of books which customers are free to sit back in the for-sale-armchairs and read. It has free Internet access and a lively buzz.
