Get On Your Horses, Kenyan Style

Where: Kenya

On those days when we figure we've spent much too long with the Tivo, it's time to dream us up a bit of adventure travel. The crew of Bailey Robinson have a motto of "travel without compromise" which seems to fit our mood, too, and our eye's been caught by a trip through currently-not-too-dangerous Kenya.

We should mention that this gang is obviously obsessed with horses, and riding features in a lot of their trips; this one in the Maasai Mara is no exception.

They call it the Offbeat Horseback Safari and the offbeat sounds like you go off the main track. But the quality's not offbeat, because you ride "well schooled thoroughbreds" through herds of cool African animals and get luxury tent accommodation set up for you including hot showers and private toilets, but at a price: around $3,900 for a twelve-day trip.

These guys also do a range of horsey trips in Tanzania, Argentina, Botswana and even cowboy training in Canada, so whatever kind of horseback adventure you want, you can probably find it. We’ve got a healthy craving for this kind of adventure but might need a few more riding lessons first.
