The city of Chicago has been requesting that car renters in the suburbs complete an affidavit with information on their travel plans to the Windy City. Enterprise is less than thrilled, and they’ve filed a lawsuit against the city.
It seems that people heading into the big city from the suburbs were taxed on their rentals, when in reality, they shouldn’t have been paying any extra fees. Cars rented within the city limits are subject to an eight percent tax, so if you’re outside the city, you shouldn’t be taxed. However, Chicago feels that if you’re driving down the Magnificent Mile, then you should pay up, since you're on their turf.
For now Enterprise is protesting by not passing out the affidavits to customers that rent in the surrounding counties, and isn't charging renters the additional fee for their cars. This whole situation sounds good to us, but we have a feeling that somehow Chicago will flex their muscle and that drives from Oak Grove will soon be hit with that additional percentage. Hopefully, we'll be able to enjoy our next trip to Chicago without having to describe our travel plans before even leaving with the car.
Maybe they can just follow us on Twitter, and figure out how many fees we deserve.
