The truth is (dangerous hyperbole alert ahead), DP has revolutionized the idea of just what a doughnut is. They look like normal doughnuts, but once you bite in you realize you've never had a doughnut quite like this. A lemon doughnut isn't a dry slab of cake with a dab of artificial lemon paste in the middle, but a light pillow-y circle infused with fresh Meyer lemon in every bite. There's also dulce de leche doughnuts—filled with crème and and topped with crisp caramelized sugar—,ultra-rich chocolate cake doughnuts, and crazy seasonal flavors like pumpkin and chai.
But if there's one stroke of genius Doughnut Plant deserves to be lauded for, it's their jelly doughnuts, which are baked in squares instead of circles, so that the freshly-made organic strawberry jelly can be spread out evenly across the inside of the doughnut, such that each and every bite is filled with just the right amount of jellied goodness, rather than one heaping goop of red stuff that falls out on your shirt after the second bite. How did anyone not think of this before?
At $2.50 a pop, DP's product certainly falls on the high end of the doughnut scale, but trust us, these babies will change the way you think about doughnuts.
