Coachella Offers Big Bands But With a Bigger Price Tag

Where: 81-800 Avenue 51 [map], Indio, CA, United States, 92201

Music festivals may be falling left and right this year, but rock's biggest Spring fling—Coachella—is still going strong, with an impressive and diverse lineup of big names.

Paul McCartney, the Killers, and the Cure are headlining the April 17 to 19 fest in Indio, Calif., while the rest of the lineup is packed with dozens of indie favs like Beirut, TV on the Radio and Peter Bjorn, along with a scattering of hip-hoppers—Lupe Fiasco, Clipse and People Under the Stairs.

Troubled diva Amy Winehouse, as we mentioned, had to cancel.

While we certainly understand the appeal, we're wondering just who can afford such an event this year. Three-day passes are an astronomical $269, and when you add in all the fees they top out at $300 a piece.

Of course, you can always save money by camping out for the weekend, right? Not so fast. Camping passes cost $55—per person. Have another $300 on hand and they'll be nice enough to sell you a two-person dome tent.

Think about food, drinks and—oh yeah, getting there—and you're looking at a $1,000-weekend. Is anyone up for this anymore?

OK, enough bitching. Here's a ray of good news—CMJ is giving away a pair of free tix.
