Ryanair's Pay-to-Pee Policy Might Not Be as Reviled as We Thought

March 10, 2009 at 11:51 AM | by juliana | 1 Comment

We thought that when Ryanair introduced the possibility of using pay-for-toilets on its airplanes, everyone would say it was an outrageous fee to force on passengers. However, thanks to a study done by Travelzoo, we've learned the sad news that 41 percent of Americans would be ok with giving up their restroom privileges if it meant saving more money on a flight. Yes, people would forfeit going to the bathroom for a cheaper flight. Is nothing sacred in-air anymore?

The Travelzoo study was conducted last July (before Ryanair's controversial fee was introduced) and the wording of the question was:

“When flying, would you agree to not use the restroom if it meant you could save 50% off the ticket price?”

Interestingly, the survey was also broken down by geographical areas of the participants. So nearly half (46 percent) of Midwesterners said they would forfeit their bathroom access for a discount. Thirty-eight percent of Northeasterners would sacrifice the loo compared to 40 percent of Southerners and 42 percent of West Coast folk.

As if that wasn't disturbing enough, 28 percent of consumers surveyed would actually stand, rather than sit if it meant they could save fifty percent on an airline ticket. We would surely do this on shuttle/commuter flights like NYC to Boston or LA to Las Vegas. But NYC to LA? Heck no. And wait, isn't it illegal to stand when the "Fasten Seat Belt" sign is turned on?

Now going to back to the urination fee, we don't think Ryanair ever said it would lower its prices if it enacted this new fee. It was pretty much just another way to make more money off of its passengers. Like Spirit's random Passenger Usage Fee. Next thing you know, airlines will charge you for the privilege of taking off your shoes or maybe taking a nap, all without ever reducing your ticket price.

So now we have to ask: What would you rather pay? A $4.90 Passenger Usage Fee or a fee onboard to use the restroom? Drop your preferences in comments below.

These line item fees are ridiculous!

In actuality, haven't we always been paying for the privilege to use the restroom on an airplane? It was simply never specified as a line item fee (at least for passengers). Now that the airlines are struggling, thanks to a huge dose of mismanagement and the rising costs of doing business, anything that was previously an unspecified luxury or service is now fair game (so they think). Nearly $5 to use the restroom?! That's robbery!! What's more is the huge pile of problems that could result from this. What if a passenger has a bladder problem and no cash? What if the payment equipment malfunctions? What if a person doesn't have correct change or a debit/credit card? They're getting so creative with fees that I can imagine they'll come up with "pre-paid toilet use cards". Maybe they'll even allow us to exchange some of our mileage credits to buy them! Is there no end in sight?! I'm going to do everything in my power to avoid flying with airlines who impose these ridiculous fees. Sadly, as more and more passengers accept them, they might eventually become commonplace. (sigh)
