There was much uproar among theme park junkies last March, when Disney announced that it would revamp the “it’s a small world” attraction at Disneyland. In addition to the new paint, improved soundtrack, and fancy lighting, they were going to—gasp—add Disney characters to the attraction. The ride has remained pretty much unchanged since its debut in 1966, so the concern was somewhat warranted.

Last Friday, after a year of renovations, the ride reopened to annual passholders. Guests floating through the ride over the weekend got to see characters from Toy Story inhabiting the new section devoted to America. Aladdin and his lady friend fly their magic carpet through the Middle East. Other cartoon favorites, like Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, have been added to the rooftops of London. The original score to the attraction remains, but now also includes portions of classic cartoon soundtracks as well.

Although we haven’t experienced the changes in person, they look pretty good to us. The new additions seem to blend into the existing scenes without overpowering the original design. For those that have only experienced the original ride a few times, they might not even notice the updates. We do understand that changing anything to such an American classic is going to sound the alarms for purists; however, in this instance, we say change is good.

    it does seem weird...

to have these new characters on the ride but then again, "small world" was always the ride that creeped me out the most (that song! those weird robotic kids!) and usually made me cry much to my brothers' delight. so it's good to know that if i ever have children and take them on this ride, i probably won't be scared.
