Still, some attendees managed to knock it out of the park for Hollywood's prom night. Maybe it was because she was unburdened by the prospect of winning an award, but Heidi Klum stunned on the carpet with a red Roland Mouret. Best Supporting Actress nominee Viola Davis didn't take home a little gold man, but her golden Reem Acra made her a fashion winner. Her co-nominee Marisa Tomei was one of the few who made white work for her with an exquisitely pleated Versace one-shoulder gown with train.
Of course, the best accessory for the night besides an Oscar was an honest and unfakeable enthusiasm just to be there. The jury's still out on Kate Winslet's blue and black Yves Saint Laurent, but no one can dispute her radiance when she took home Best Actress for "The Reader." And even before they found out their film took home Best Picture, Dev Patel and Freida Pinto (in Burberry and John Galliano) -- looking barely older than high-school prom-goers themselves -- were all smiles outside.
Other big winners of the night were Sean Penn as Best Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, and the late Heath Ledger whose turn as the Joker allowed his family to take home Best Supporting Actor in his memory. So who do you think looked best? (What was up with Madonna's new face at the Vanity Fair party?) And who should have won last night?
