French Carribbean Paradise Looking More Like War Zone

Where: Martinique
February 24, 2009 at 11:01 AM | by BS | 0 Comments

The month-long labor strike paralyzing the French Carribbean isles of Martinique and Guadeloupe has grown increasingly violent—with rioters looting buildings and burning cars, at least one protester shot and killed by police, and tourists desperate to get out.

The situation is the worst in Guadeloupe, where protesters have blocked roads to the airport and tourists have been advised to stay in their hotel rooms, although there have been no specific reports of threats or violence against foreigners.

And the strike has devastated the isles' tourism economy, with cruise ships docking elsewhere instead and at least 10,000 travelers canceling flights.

Air France has said they will offer anyone with trips booked to either island between now and March 15 the chance to postpone their trips or rebook elsewhere in the world.

However, Madeleine de Grandmaison, chairwoman of the Martinique Tourism Authority, has issued a statement reassuring travelers of their safety when visiting the country:

“Let me be clear in stating that Martinique is 100% open for tourist business despite the strike. The reasons behind the strikes in Martinique and Guadeloupe are similar, but the situation in Martinique stands in stark contrast to that in our sister island. We have had no violence, very few arrests and absolutely no threats toward visitors.

The strike has had a significant impact on the lives of my fellow Martinican residents. This is particularly so for those living in and around our capital city of Fort-de-France where the demonstrations have been concentrated.

However, for stayover visitors vacationing in the outlying resort areas away from the city, there has been little or no impact. Our airport, all of our hotels and many attractions have remained open during the entire strike period, and we are accommodating our guests in the best manner possible.

She then went onto mention that cruises have been the most affected since the cruise port lies in the heart of Fort-de-France where the strike is most dangerous. Therefore, cruises with stops scheduled in Martinique will be diverted to other destinations.
