So, How's Spring Break Shaping Up for 2009?

February 21, 2009 at 2:51 PM | by Victor Ozols | 0 Comments

We might still be in the midst of winter, but spring break is just around the corner, and if you haven't started making travel arrangements yet, you'd best get cracking. Much like the wildebeest migration in Africa, the advent of spring triggers a race to the world's beaches by millions of horny college kids and those who drink like them, but a big question mark hangs over this year's party: Will the global economic meltdown put the kibosh on the youthful shenanigans?

A scan of spring break stories indicates that the kids still want to travel, but many are waiting to book their trips, hopeful that last-minute deals will emerge to fill otherwise vacant airline seats and hotel rooms. But the picture isn't as bleak as it might seem. Tourism officials in Texas say that Corpus Christi will likely see a bump in visits this spring due to hurricane damage in Galveston and South Padre. Panama City, Florida, meanwhile, is seeing about the same number of bookings as last year, and will once again host mtvU's Spring Break Party from March 8-21. And discount student travel agency STA Travel is reporting that Cancun is looking forward to about 30,000 visitors this spring break, in line with past years.

We're well past our woo-hoo kegstand years, but we've gone ahead and bought tickets to Key West in April anyway, hoping for some sunshine, rum drinks, and kayaking adventures. Anybody out there plotting a riotous trip this spring? Please share your plans - and any Key West recommendations - in the comments.
