Has Google Ocean Found the Missing City of Atlantis?

February 20, 2009 at 8:41 AM | by | Comments (2)

According to a British aeronautical engineer, Google Ocean, an extension of Google Earth, has found what many humans could not: the lost city of Atlantis. A near-perfect rectangular grid has shown up about 620 miles off the coast of northwest Africa, near the Canary Islands and it looks like it's on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.

For real Google Ocean nerds who want to look for themselves the coordinates are: 31 15'15.53N 24 15'30.53W.

Civilization first heard about Atlantis through Greek philosopher Plato who said the city "sank beneath the ocean after its residents made a failed effort to conquer Athens around 9000 BC." Earthquakes and floods also contributed to its underwater resting place. One Atlantis expert told the Telegraph UK that this new Google Ocean image could be a very plausible site for the lost city as it's close to Plato's proposed locations.

So what if this IS the real Atlantis? What about all those fake Atlantises like the Atlantis Resorts in the Bahamas and Dubai? Won't they look kind of silly now? Also, Atlantis: The Lost Empire will need some updating.
