Hey Virgin America, Guess What? Southwest Flying Out of Boston Too

Airline fight at three o'clock in the parking lot! Fight, fight, fight....

Ok so the rivalry between Southwest and Virgin America isn't exactly like the fights between the metalheads and the preppies that you witnessed in high school but it's close.

Just last week Virgin kicked off their new service from Boston Logan International Airport and now today, Southwest has announced their service from BOS starting in the Fall of 2009. Here are some scant details from the press release:

The carrier has not released specific service details, saying only that it will begin with a conservative number of flights that will complement its 64 airport network. Southwest Airlines Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO Gary Kelly shared the news with Southwest Employees at a Company event in Chicago last night.

You can see the short clip of Kelly (sans Pats cheerleader outfit) announcing the new route above or here.

It's not Southwest's first foray into New England territory. The low-cost carrier has already been in service at Providence's TF Green International Airport and at Manchester Boston Regional Airport. As far as we can tell, Southwest will be keeping service at both of those airports while it launches Boston.

While Sir Richard Branson and VA used the New England Patriots cheerleaders at their launch party, Southwest is tapping into the slogan from the old comedy, "Cheers"--"where everybody knows their name." From the blog:

So when we finally land at Logan—it’s going to be like the many scenes from the iconic sitcom set in Boston, “Cheers” when Norm walks into the bar. When we start serving Logan—we’re thinking everyone will shout “HELLO, SOUTHWEST!”

Does this mean you will have bar stools at the boarding gates? Also, we have a pretty good idea of what celebs will be in attendance at the Southwest BOS launch party.

But in all seriousness, in an age where airlines are dinging you for checked bags, onboard meals, inflight entertainment and even pillows, this sort of airline competition is the one shining spot in an otherwise dreary travel world for us passengers. The more competition, the better the airfare deals. And we can't complain about that.
