Where to Stay:
The Hilton Baltimore Hotel should still have that new hotel smell since it has been open for less than a year. It connects to the Baltimore Convention Center via a skybridge and offers the usual amenities, a heated indoor pool, whirlpool and sauna, a fitness center, a restaurant (The Diamond Tavern) and a bar. For VIPs there is an Executive Floor for private check-in and access to the hotel's Executive Lounge. Currently, the hotel's lowest rate is about $250 but since opening they have run the occasional promotion with rates as low as $99.
Where to Eat:
Instead of the usual local Baltimore delicacy of beer and crab cakes, check out The Helmand for a taste of authentic Afghan cuisine. The restaurant, located at 806 Charles St, is featured in the movie but you may not recognize it since their sign and front door were both swapped out for movie props. Daily specials include Dolma Murch, a dish made of bell peppers stuffed with seasoned vegetables, beans and wild rice simmered in a sun-dried tomatoes and rhubarb sauce. The Helmand is open Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
What to See:
“The Avenue”, a strip along 36th Street in Hampden, was made famous by John Waters and is proud to embrace all things pink and fuzzy. This strip of old school record stores, book stores, kitschy gifts shops and greasy spoons is a nice break from a weekend of beers at the Harbor.
