Bouillon’s Not Just For Soup in Paris

Where: 3 rue Racine, Paris, France, 75006

Eating at this historical landmark just around the corner from the Place de l’Odeon in Paris’s St. Germain des Pres district is like taking a step back in time to the early 1900’s, with the service and menu to match.

The Bouillon Racine has been around since 1906, housed in a gorgeous Belle Epoque building with delicate iron latticework, Art Nouveau lighting fixtures, intricate woodwork, beveled mirrors, glass “paintings,” and an absinthe-green bar.

There used to be such “bouillons” all over Paris, but now only a few remain, including Racine. The restaurant owes its current glory to a renovation completed in 1996, which is also when it qualified to become a historical landmark.

We first stumbled across it a decade ago thanks to a French friend with a lot more caché than we’ll ever have, and we’ve been coming back here ever since.

Just like the building itself, the service has all old-fashioned glory of a bygone era, with dedicated career waiters and a classic French menu. Even if you just order a glass of house wine, it comes with a little biscuit and a fruit candy to complement the flavors. Try some of the classic specialties like spit-roasted suckling pick, chicken blanquette, or cod fish with olive tapenade from Aix en Provence. There is also escargot, and homemade duck foie gras, bien sur!

The food isn’t cheap, but hey, you’re paying for ambiance…and it’s worth every centime.

Bouillon Racine is open every day from Noon-11pm. Call +33 1 44 32 15 60 for reservations.
