A Sticky Treat Near the New Times Square

Where: 623 11th Avenue [map], New York, NY, United States, 10036

Daisy May's is probably the most over-covered of all the NYC BBQ joints, but even though Oprah, Rachel Ray and the Today Show have already visited chef Adam Perry Lang's Hell's Kitchen cafeteria, no serious Barbecue lover could leave this one off the list.

Leaving aside the food for a moment, Daisy May's has one of our favorite restaurant creation stories. A few years back, a venerable institution called the Penthouse Club decided to open an establishment in the Times Square West area. But this is the new Times Square, not the old one, so that meant the new strip club had to include a ritzy steakhouse, and of course a hot young chef.

The owners went after Lang, who had worked at high-end places like Daniel and Le Cirque. Lang agreed to shill steaks in front of strippers, but only on the condition that he could also put together a dry-aging room in the basement and use the vacant space next door to serve up his Kansas City-style sticky pork ribs.

Fast-forward a few years and Daisy May's is a full-scale restaurant with a much larger fan base than the Penthouse Club, and Lang's empire has also extended to an uber-popular BBQ street cart serving Sixth Avenue office drones.

As for the food, it's a little pricey for 'cue--$17.50 for a plate of ribs and two heaping sides--but it lives up to the hype and for cheapskates, a serving can easily feed two hungry people.
