The Orient Express Train Loses Steam, Finally Calls It Quits

One evening a few years ago, our measly little Trenitalia train limped into Venice's Santa Lucia station. At the track opposite ours sat a slick black train, with the words "Compagnie Internationale des Wagon-Lits" written on the side. "Oh my god," we thought; it's the frickin' Orient Express! So we proceeded to mentally freak out, even though we shouldn't have been so surprised since the train did call the watery city home as a terminus.

Anyway, that Venice train we saw is only one of several trains bearing the "Orient Express" name, and one of them is coming to an end. The original Orient Express, which once ran the exotic route from Paris to Varna and on to Istanbul by steamer, will cease operation on December 12 of this year.

But don't be sad...

Now don't get all sad over it, as we almost did. This train is a mere shadow of its former opulent self; service was cut years ago when the highspeed TGV began, and now this Orient Express only runs between Strasbourg and Vienna—hardly an "orient express" at all. The grand meals in dining cars are gone, the original Pullman cars are gone, and indeed even the passengers have gone, abandoning the train as it abandoned its history throughout the years.

And still—that Orient Express we saw in Venice? It's sticking around! That's the Venice Simplon Orient Express, a totally different one which runs better routes to Paris, Budapest, and even Istanbul still. Now don't forget there's still the American Orient Express, and the Eastern Orient Express, and the Pullman Orient Express...

UNTRUE Rumor! Orient Express train is NOT ceasing

Season just over till Mar 24, 2010. Confirmed with Orient Express Headquarters in Rhode Island. Please RT http://su.pr/86sttY

twitter?

Did you mean to tweet that, because obviously we can "RT" on here. Anyway, are you sure that it's the Strasbourg-Vienna line that's restarting in May, because it's easily confused with the other ones, and yet this is the one the Guardian reported is shutting down. When the Guardian corrects and confirms, we'll follow suit.

VSOE REview

I can vouch for the Venice Simplon Orient Express, a superlative travel exoperience. Here's my review of the journey taken back in 2010. http://www.trainsonthebrain.com/2010/07/19/the-venice-simplon-orient-express-because-were-worth-it-p art-1/ For anyone interested in the history of the trains and routes, Roger Eame's book 8.55 to Baghdad is essential reading. He follows in the footsteps of Agatha Christie who travelled solo on it, and on the spin-off the Taurus Express all the way to Iraq.
