Christmas Shopping For Your Favorite Traveler At Fred Segal Santa Monica

If you've heard the name Fred Segal before, it's probably because US Weekly mainstays have often been photographed emerging from the store with a signature red, white and blue shopping bag in hand. The West Hollywood outpost may be better for star sighting, but we prefer the Santa Monica store, which is broken up into several idiosyncratic boutiques.

High prices and pretentious salespeople often deter shoppers from stopping by retailers of Fred Segal's ilk, but we've never had that problem in Santa Monica. We were there last night for a charity event last night co-hosted by Rachel Leigh Cook, to which guests brought unwrapped presents for donation to Toys For Tots, and did a little impromptu research into holiday gifts for travelers.

Our destination of choice is ZeroMinusPlus, where owner Darrylynn Kaun showed us what she described as "the best travel blanket ever." The LUG NAPSAC ($28) is a soft blanket + pillow set, complete with an inflation tool for the pillow and a zip around case for easy carrying.

We also stumbled across some of our favorite compact notebooks from Cavallini & Co., printed with maps and/or names of cities worldwide, PuzzleMaps (a suggested hostess gift by Kaun), cookbooks featuring recipes sourced by world travelers, and amazing necklaces by Falling Whistles, whose proceeds go toward the plight of children in Congo's war-torn regions. Kaun has dedicated an entire section of her boutique to Falling Whistles, deeming it a "good work space" that emphasizes the ways a simple purchase can make a significant charitable difference. What better time than during the holidays to give a little, get a little?
