Settle in for a Long Winter's Nap on Dominican Republic Beaches

Spend your holiday in a hammock.

When December hits, people get excited for snow, treats and spending time with family. But for many of us that translates into non-stop shoveling, nasty fruit cake and yet another family screaming match. Forget Christmas this year—and the stress that comes along with it—and head to the Dominican Republic.

And how about this for a relaxing non-holiday: an all-inclusive vacay at Excellence Puta Cana that costs $123 a night for stays through December 23.

So while dad and grandpa have another fight over the eggnog, you'll be lounging on the resort's 30-mile white sand beach and enjoying the unlimited alcohol that comes as part of the deal. Any place that has the moniker "Coconut Coast" because of its endless palm trees will ensure relaxation.

Aside from the inclusive meals, two pools and two Jacuzzis, the resort offers other freebies. You'll have the opportunity to take lessons in Spanish, dance and cooking. Or you can go horseback riding, get schooled in scuba or learn air rifle shooting (we're not kidding).

But head off the resort to take in more of the scenery, especially underwater. The locale, which sits along the east coast of the island, is known for its networks of caves, cenotes and underground rivers. You can take cave tours and go cave snorkeling throughout the area. Nearby Isla Catalina is an uninhabited island and tropical nature preserve that has some popular sites for diving. Or go to national park Isla Saona, whose shallow waters are supposedly great for snorkeling. It'll be a merry holiday after all.
