What the exact criterion are for gauging popular destinations isn't clear—affordability? A country or city's je ne sais quoi? We're also confused by some of the picks for 2010's "Best Value Destinations," London and Las Vegas, especially. Others on the value list include more run-of-the-mill choices like Mexico and Malaysia.
As far as the best things to do go, Lonely Planet's round-up proves that you can't go wrong with the classics, like getting in touch with your faux-bohemian at Burning Man or trekking Spain's Camino de Santiago. There are some events specific to '10 that you shouldn't miss out on, too, like the Vancouver Olympics, World Expo in Shanghai, and booking a ticket on one of Virgin Galactic's space test flights. That last trip will only run you around $200,000, so we hope you saved up some Christmas money.
