Mind the Gap While Touring London's Historic and Haunted Underground

December 16, 2009 at 2:04 PM | by Heidi Atwal | 0 Comments

"Mind the Gap" t-shirts and color-coded maps of London's famed Underground system are all-too-common souvenirs for tourists who trek to the UK. But few know much about the historic transport network, other than that it's hellishly busy during rush hour.

Insider London is offering Underground-themed tours for train aficionados, or those who've stopped by quintessential city landmarks and are looking to see London through fresh eyes. If its cocktail hour factoids you want, then you'll certainly get them, from learning about the man behind the "Mind the Gap" voice to the Central Line's ghost station.

If you're averse to the idea of elbowing your way past angry commuters, then the tour may not be for you. Naturally, riding the rails is a part of the deal. But, public transportation-devotees—your day has come. Along with phantom tales, tour guides will regale you with stories about the tropical insects (huh?) that only live in the Underground, and how the tube tunnels were dug by hand. The tour runs at 11:00, 2:00, and 7:30 PM and costs £34.50.

The more intense "Epic Tube Tour" will take you above and below ground for six sprawling hours, showing you the Underground's bomb shelter architecture and Winston Churchill's underground 'burrow', among other things. This tour runs at 10:00 or 11:00 AM at a cost of £79.50.

With frigid weather afflicting London, this might be the one time that the Underground's 10 degree temperature increase is welcome.
