Football Rivalry Travel: Buckeyes And Wolverines Ready To Rumble

Professional football has arrived and the World Series is pretty cool, but more importantly for some, college football is going strong. Here’s the scoop on just one of the country’s best rivalries to help your sports travel planning.

· Rivalry Match-Up: The Ohio State University at The University of Michigan on November 21
These two schools hate one another even though the teams aren’t as competitive as they used to be. Let’s just say they are both in a rebuilding period—especially Michigan. The teams have been battling it out since the 1930s, with the winner of the game often winning the Big Ten Conference and heading out to the Rose Bowl. Some even refer to this rivalry as simply The Game, so it’s pretty clear that this is a big one. Ohio State has won the last five games in a row, but Wolverine fans can always hope that this is their year to take home the win.

· Home Turf: Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan
The home to the Michigan Wolverines is an oldie but a goodie. The stadium known as The Big House has been standing since the 1920s. After a cash infusion and a lot of work following the 2008 season, the stadium now can hold well over 100,000 fans. In 2003 the stadium hosted about 112,000 fans when they were playing Ohio State, so things will definitely be cozy. If the Wolverines are doing well make sure to participate in the Michigan Wave. It’s like the regular wave but just a little fancier. The students usually throw in some slow motion tricks and enjoy splitting the wave into two groups.

· Away Team Accommodations: Like most big college football rivalries, there’s a lot of fans from out of town planning to attend the big game. If you’re still thinking about attending you better snag a hotel room now, since choices are becoming limited. It’s hard for us to recommend the Days Inn of Ann Arbor, but it’s available for about $130 per night during the weekend of the big game. For a safer and more comfortable choice just take a short drive over to Ypsilanti where you’ll have a wider selection of not gross accommodations.

· Where to Party: If you’re looking to down a few before heading into the stadium make your way to Ashley’s. They’ve got plenty of beers on tap, and there’s usually a couple high gravity brews that will have you ready to start your own cheering section. Even better than their selection of adult beverages is their selection of french fries. They’ve got six different kinds including Chicken Curry Fries—they’ve got to be good, no? The place is less than a mile away from the stadium, so staggering there before or after the game should be no problem.

    Ann Arbor - my home town

    There are no great hotels within a 50 miles of Ann Arbor. Weber's is about the best, the rest are your standard Courtyard Marriots and Hilton Garden Inns and such. There may be more rooms available in Ypsi, but Ypsi is icky. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary you might want to try to snag a room at one of the on-campus hotels -- Bell Tower Hotel, the Michigan League, or Campus Inn. Yes, make your reservation now. Your best bet post game is to simply walk north on Main St. from the Stadium. 15 minutes you'll be in the heart of Ann Arbor. More restaurants than you can count. For Bars -- Local Dive: Old Towne Tavern. Too Hip: Melange. Shoot pool: Monkey Bar. Fancy Schmancy: La Dolce Vita. Fake Irish Pub Full of Douchebag Tucker Max Wannabes: Conor O'Neils.

    We'll remember that "Ypsi is icky," as long as we live. Also, mental note to never go to Conor O'Neils, Old Towne Tavern sounds a little better. Thanks again.
