All Calm On The Western Front, Or Is Chaos To Come At Cali Airports?

November 25, 2009 at 3:20 PM | by Heidi Atwal | 0 Comments

We witnessed eerie calm at LAX yesterday, but will it stay that way?

This Thanksgiving, story after story about poor economic conditions and travelers' hermetically-sealed pocketbooks have flooded the newswires, and we're wondering if this miserly attitude is affecting your Thanksgiving air travel on the West Coast and beyond.

Quite honestly, we're not sure what to think given some conflicting reports. Outlets like Voice of America claim that Americans are being more fiscally conservative and opting for train and car travel, while The San Francisco Chronicle cites AAA as saying that, at least in California, travel will be up by eight percent from last year by car, train, and plane.

Personally, we witnessed abnormally short, swiftly moving lines at LAX and a very calm scene after arriving at SFO yesterday—two of the nation's busiest airports. Well, all calm save for a couple attempting to safely transport a $5,000 painting on our Virgin flight. (It arrived safely, as far as we could tell.) But with most jaunt-ers taking off today, what air travel will look like overall this year is still—pardon the pun—up in the air.

For those departing from SFO, parking may be one worry to strike from your list. The Examiner reports that those needing long-term parking can take advantage of the short-term lot should the former fill up. An SFO spokesperson says to expect a chaotic scene, but who knows how these predictions will play out.

If you happen to be passing through any California airports, give us your first-hand observations by commenting below.
