Cash In On Your Travel Disasters In 'World's Unluckiest Traveler' Contest

November 24, 2009 at 4:36 PM | by Omri | 0 Comments

Everyone has an adventure horror story they like to tell. The unfortunate reality, though, is that most of those stories are just overdramatic whining. Yes, it sucks you had to sit next to a crying baby on a Southwest shuttle between Vegas and San Jose. No, it wasn't the worst flight ever.

There are, however, those travelers who have genuinely painful trips to relate. All their reservations got canceled or all their luggage got stolen. A friend ended up sick or they ended up pregnant. They had no choice except to fly through JFK during Thanksgiving. Hair-raising stuff like that is what we're talking about. If you're one of those people, travel insurance company Travel Guard is offering you a chance to cash in on your past misfortunes in their newest travel contest. If your story is really good, there's a Flip camcorder in it for you. If it's really, really, really good you might win $10,000.

The prizes are part of Travel Guard's new "World's Unluckiest Traveler" contest, kicking off on their site as of December 1. Every month they'll be giving away two Flip MinoHDTM camcorders. The first will obviously be going to the person who had the month's most entertaining tale of woe. That unfortunate soul will also be entered to win the $10,000 grand prize at the end of the contest. The second camcorder will be awarded to a random reader who voted for that story as the month's worst. So even if you haven't suffered on an extended trip you might get to freeload off someone who has. Win/win.

We were going to submit one of our worst trips, which happened when it took us 60 hours to get from Rome to Boston. There was an unplanned overnight at Heathrow that involved getting shaken awake by a gentleman with an automatic weapon, and that wasn't the worst part. But then they'd ask a question like "why did you miss your flight in Rome" and we'd say "because we relied on Italian public transportation to get us to the airport on time." And then they'd point at us and laugh and laugh and laugh.
