Discover President Obama's Lost Years on a Tour of His New York Haunts

President Obama is most closely associated with the city of Chicago, but he spent five years in New York as a student and community organizer, and a local actor has created a walking tour that shines a light on what he calls Obama's "lost years" here. The AP introduces us to Jeremiah Miller, whose two-hour "Obama's New York" tour takes visitors to some of the places the 44th president spent time during his 1981-1985 stint in the city.

The tour makes stops at Columbia University, where Obama studied political science and international relations, and Tom's Restaurant, where he ate breakfast before the place was immortalized by Jerry, Kramer, George, and Elaine. But what makes the tour interesting are Miller's readings from Obama's autobiography, Dreams From My Father, including one that describes his rather unpleasant first night in the city: "I spent my first night in Manhattan curled up in an alleyway." It seems nobody was home at the apartment he was supposed to be renting, and he had no other place to go. Moments like that really do suck.

Other stops on the tour include City College in Harlem, where Obama organized students on issues such as recycling. The $25 tour seems like money well spent, but you could always read the book and retrace his steps yourself. Either way, it's interesting to note that Obama is the nation's first truly urban president in generations.
