Spring In New Zealand Brings Extreme Biking, Surfing And Golfing

November 2, 2009 at 4:34 PM | by amandak | 0 Comments

With sunshiny days flooding into the southern hemisphere, New Zealand is getting ready to host a whole bunch of sporting events that will no doubt attract a few tourist-fans too. Whether you're into tough endurance sports, sedate strolls or hitting the waves, there is an event to suit your New Zealand plans.

The Moa Beer Moa Hunt attracted us pretty easily just through the sponsor's name in the title, but then we found out it's hard work: a 40 kilometer (25 mile) mountain bike race on a course they describe as "stunning," which we can only guess means "very mountainous and hard on the legs." But if you're fitter than us, the good news is it's not too late to enter online for the November 28 race.

For something more sedate, the Kiwi Challenge golf tournament is coming up on November 14 and 15, where four young PGA tour golfers will be vying for a NZ$1 million prize. Spectator tickets cost NZ$50 (US$35) and the tournament is taking place at a snazzy resort in Hawkes Bay—worth a trip just for the scenery.

And finally, if you can wait a little longer, January brings the Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championships to the black sand Piha Beach in Auckland from 20 to 28 January, 2010. It's for surfers under 18 years of age so it's the kind of event where you'll see the future stars before they're really famous, so grab some autographs!
