Off Rodeo Drive: Our Guide to Shopping LA's West Third Street

Where: West Third Street [map], Los Angeles, CA, United States

In this installment of Off Rodeo Drive, we're calling attention to a Los Angeles shopping destination that some would say looks like a shadow of its former self. Driving down West Third Street just past The Grove, you'll notice many more empty, stripped-down storefronts than there were just a year ago. Contemporary favorites like Built By Wendy and Pixie Market—both New York transplants—have shut down, along with a beloved cookbook store whose departure locals mourned.

Yet, West Third Street remains one of our very favorite places to shop in the city. Stores that have stuck around have earned their loyal clientele, customers which include oft-photographed celebrities ducking into Joan's On Third or Toast for a post-shopping lunch. So, without further ado, here are five stores to hit in the area for a quality retail fix—after the jump.

· Aero & Co.
Aero & Co. was one of the first Los Angeles boutiques to carry Mike & Chris' hooded leather jackets before they hit the big time. Suffice to say the store's owners are far ahead of the trend curve, stocking their store with cool oddities like feather necklaces, oversized vintage sunglasses, and cotton tees that are anything but basic. The range of price points make this a good destination for those hoping to save a little money, but walk way with something that looks like a million bucks—or at least $200-300. 8403 West 3rd Street, 323.653.4651

· Milk
Oh, boy, does Milk do a body good. Just ask Kim Kardashian, who we once shopped alongside as she perused some of the store's well-cultivated selection of jeans and dresses. This is one of the pricier places to shop on West Third, as they carry designers with a major presence on the contemporary market. Look out for unique pieces by Sretsis and funny ha-ha paper goods by Knock Knock. 8209 West Third Street, 323.951.0330

· Satine
Long-time West Third favorite Satine is your go-to source for Alexander Wang, Thakoon (a favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama, as you might remember), and A.L.C., the label developed by revered stylist Andrea Lieberman. They recently moved across the street to a bigger storefront, which just means more room to ogle an expansive collection of clothing that screams "Dream Closet." 8134 West 3rd Street, 323.655.2142

· Traveler's Bookcase
We would be remiss not to mention Traveler's Bookcase, a store almost completely dedicated to travel and guidebooks. We say almost because if you wander to the back of the cozy space, you might come across the latest hard-bound copy of McSweeney's or a collection of L.A.-themed candles by a line called—what else?—West Third. Locals will enjoy the perk of free delivery if you shop with the store. 8375 West Third Street, 323.655.0575

· OK
This may very well be West Third's most kick-ass store. Here you'll find eccentric home goods ripe for gift-giving, including office miscellany, Japanese dishes and accessories, and art books that would add significant cool heft to anyone's coffee table. On our last visit we also found a square condom dispenser that was so discreet and well-designed that it couldn't possibly offend anyone's sensibility. Well, okay, maybe it's not the best stocking stuffer item for grandma this season. 8303 West 3rd Street, 323.653.3501
